Morrisons has returned to growth for the first time this year, according to data released today by Kantar Worldpanel. The retailer recorded sales growth of 1.2% in the 12 weeks to 12 May, contrasting with sales growth of 0.3% last month, -1% in March and minus 1.3% in February. Its market share fell however, with 11.9% recorded last year, compared to a share of 11.6% this year.
Aldi continued its march, reporting its strongest ever market share of 3.5%, up from 2.8% a year ago, with sales growth of 31.5%. Waitrose also performed well, with sales growth of 12% and a market share of 4.9%. Lidl's sales in the UK grew by 8.9%, with its market share now standing at 3%. The UK's largest retailer Tesco saw its market share fall from 30.8% to 30.2% but sales were up by 1.7%.
