UK retailer Marks & Spencer is considering the implementation of a new loyalty-card system that would reward its shoppers through goods and exclusive offers, as opposed to points, Reuters and The Guardian report.
This project, which carries the working title of 'Sparks', is at present undergoing a test phase by the grocer.
Rather than employing a points-for-pounds system, M&S’s loyalty programme is thought to be closer to Waitrose’s MyWaitrose card system, through which free newspapers and coffee are offered to shoppers.
In its statement to Reuters, M&S commented, “At our recent prelims presentation [20 May results] we said that being more in-touch with our customers was one of our priorities for the year ahead. However, we would not comment on rumour and speculation about future activity.”
