German retailer Netto Marken-Discount will accept payments from American Express credit cards in all its 4,200 outlets across the country, according to a press release.
The retail giant will also accept contactless payment via near-field communication (NFC) technology for purchases amounting to €50.
NFC payments are possible at Netto Marken-Discount for non-Amex users.
In 2016 and 2017, all outlets of Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd in Germany started accepting Amex payments.
Better Customer Service
With this partnership with Netto Marken-Discount, Amex 'continues to expand its acceptance partner network in the German retail sector'.
Sonja Scott, vice-president for the acceptance partner business at Amex, said that the move brings "comfort and flexibility" in the daily lives of consumers.
"[It] makes us very happy, and, at the same time, significantly increases our acceptance in the food retail sector," Scott added.
For Netto Marken-Discount, Amex adds to the range of payment methods and gives customers "convenience in terms of contactless payment".
Secure Contactless Payment
Customers can pay securely via NFC without having to put the card in a terminal at the till.
The contactless card uses wireless technology over a short distance.
Payment information is transmitted within seconds via an encrypted chip, when customers hold the card close to the contactless reader.
Since the distance is limited to four centimetres, the required safety is ensured.
