Coop To Turn Organic Waste Into Eco Friendly Biofuel

The Coop, which produces approximately 40,000 tons of organic waste annually, has singed an agreement with NC Environment to turn their organic waste into biofuel. Their 1,200 stores across Denmark will be the first to initiate this project.

Rather than being incinerated, the organic waste will picked by Coop stores and transferred to NC Environment's machine which will turns waste into biogas.

The gas can be used for electricity and heating. The 40,000 tons of waste from Coop save the environment for 10,270 tonnes of CO2 annually and can heat 5,700 households up a whole year and covers 7,800 people's energy.

"We therefore welcome the Government's new resource strategy, because it is just that our initiative will ensure more recycling and less waste incineration. Our agreement means both a huge environmental benefit to society - but it is also financially beneficial for us because our waste will have a greater value, "says Anna Lise Mortensen, accountability director, Coop.
