Portuguese supermarket chain Pingo Doce has teamed up with online food delivery company Takeaway.com to offer meal delivery services in Lisbon.
Initially, the free-of-cost service will be available within a radius of 2.5 kilometres from Pingo Doce’s Telheiras and Tomás Ribeiro stores.
In the coming months, it will be extended to other areas of Lisbon, the company said.
'An Innovative Service'
According to João Freitas, meal solutions director at Pingo Doce, the new service "aims to respond to the latest trends in the restaurant market, by offering an innovative service in the food distribution market".
Orders can be placed from the Takeaway.com application and website.
The banner’s parent company, Jerónimo Martins Group, operates three kitchens, located in Vila Nova de Gaia, Odivelas and Aveiro, that supply food to more than 400 stores and 32 restaurants across Portugal.
Takeaway Segment
Last year, the takeaway segment generated €180.9 million in revenues for hypermarkets and supermarkets in Portugal, up 11% year on year.
The retail takeaway segment has seen double-digit growth in Portugal in the past two years.
