Portuguese shoppers are increasingly preferring quality to promotions, according to the Escolha do Consumidor Consumer Choice survey for the period 2013-2016.
Lusa reports that the survey polled 1,937 individuals between the ages of 25 and 60 residing in the greater Lisbon and greater Porto areas. It analysed eight major sectors and more than 40 product categories, revealing that the quality/price ratio remains the main reason consumers choose one brand over another.
Retail Trends
Escolha do Consumidor managing director José Borralho said that Portuguese consumers are much more alert to products, services and brands that satisfy them rather than concentrating on price, depending on the category.
For example, in the case of household hygiene products, shoppers generally opt for promotions, however, in personal hygiene category, product quality is paramount.
The survey also shows that in the retail and distribution segment, product diversity and brand credibility have grown as factors influencing the buying process. In the specific case of coffee, 91% of respondents said that quality is the essential factor in choosing a brand or product.
