Portuguese retail chains Continente, Pingo Doce and Meu Super have opened a number of new stores across the country in recent weeks.
Sonae MC invested €6 million in a new 1,455 square metre Contintente hypermarket in Setubal, expanding its network in the district to 23 outlets.
The space offers a wide range of over 10,000 products, and includes a bakery, butchery, fish, fruit and vegetables, and a selection of local produce.
Meanwhile, Sonae MC’s neighbourhood store banner Meu Super has opened two stores in the city of Amadora.
With 265 and 220 square meters of sales area, respectively, the retailer says that the new stores are characterised by the attention given to customer service and the focus on fresh produce.
All of the stores include products from Continente’s private label ranges Seleção Continente, Fácil & Bom Continente, Contemporal, Área Viva Continente, and MyLabel.
Algarve Expansion
Elsewhere, Pingo Doce, which is part of the Jerónimo Martins group, has opened its third store in Loulé, located in the Mar Shopping Algarve mall.
The store, which has a total sales area of 1,780 square metres, features a sushi and take-away area, as well as a wide assortment of fresh products and a wine cellar.
With the latest opening, the supermarket chain strengthens its position in the Algarve region, where it already operates 28 stores.
Overall, the Portuguese retail sector experienced 3.8% growth in the first half of 2017.
