Brazilian consumers can save of up to BRL 2,000 (€547.50) per year on groceries in the city of Sao Paulo, just by shopping around, according to a survey by consumers association Proteste.
The study was based on the cost of two baskets of products. Basket 1 had the widest assortment, with 104 products from leading brands, while Basket 2 included only the cheapest products found in stores visited. Both baskets included food, hygiene and cleaning products, representing the typical consumption of a Brazilian family.
A total of 1,388 establishments in 23 Brazilian cities in 16 states and the Federal District were surveyed. Ceara was the state with least variation in price (7%), while in the state of Sao Paulo the variation in price was 13 per cent.
The federal capital Brasilia saw the biggest price differential (22 per cent).
In São Paulo, the price difference for fresh cheese (Minas Frescal, 250g) amounted to a whopping 169 per cent – ranging from BRL 10.40 to BRL 27.99.
