Sainsbury's Highlights Energy Saving With LED Bulb Promotion

Ahead of the clocks going back in parts of Europe this weekend, British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is running a promotion, which it claims will "keep homes bright while saving customers cash".

In its bid to boost sustainability, the retailer is offering a 25-per-cent saving on Philips LED light bulbs, with the deal being available both in store and online.

"LED bulbs are very long-lasting and cost less to run than traditional bulbs," said the company. "According to Philips, they deliver an immediate, significant saving on your energy bills."

It is something that Sainsbury’s has made significant use of in its bid to boost sustainability, and the retailer claims to be one of the largest users of LED light bulbs in the country.

The supermarket has successfully trialled different LED formats for stores and car-park lighting, and the power-saving bulbs are now standard. Retro-fitting stores with LEDs has already helped to save between ten and 12 per cent of a Sainsbury's store’s energy usage.

The supermarket has installed more than 70,000 LED lights in stores, and by the end of this financial year, it will have fitted 100,000 LEDs and saved 54.6 GWh. The retailer’s Emerald Park depot, for example, has reduced electricity use by nearly one third with LED lighting.

Paul Crewe, head of sustainability at Sainsbury's, said, "Customers are often put off by the higher price tag of some LEDs, but our experience at Sainsbury’s is proof that it’s worth every penny."

LEDs have been successful at bringing down the retailer's energy costs and improving its green credentials, he said, adding that "we’re rolling them out across our entire estate". He continued, "It’s something that can easily be replicated in the home, and as the clocks go back, we’re helping customers to bring their own bills down, too."

The promotion will run until 27 November.
