Sainsbury’s charitable donations amounted to a total of £45.8 million this annum, including corporate donations along with donations to national charities such as Comic Relief.
The supermarket has also continued its food donation partnerships with 751 stores, providing a front-of-store facility for customers to make donations. Some 666 stores have a back-of-store donation partnership for surplus food, while 528 stores support both initiatives. There has been an increase of over 180% in food donation partnerships since October 2015.
Chief Executive, Mike Coupe said: “We are delighted with our latest annual community investment donation, which for our last financial year totalled an impressive £45.8 million”.
The supermarket’s bid to improve nutrition while reformulating its own brand has continued, with a calorie cut version of in-store baked favourites such as ring-doughnuts and cookies. The improved recipes will remove an estimated 1.5 billion calories a year from customer’s baskets.
Sainsbury’s is also committed to sourcing 100% British lamb this season despite a wet spring, and will continue to support British farmers supplying British lamb all year round both at meat counters and Taste the Difference and organic ranges.
Sainsbury’s strives to make a positive impact within its communities by, once again, sponsoring Sport Relief Games and offering an extensive range of official merchandise where all profits went directly to the cause. Similarly, Sainsbury’s will be supporting The British Paralympic Games this coming August with a range of merchandise being sold across stores.
