Two thirds of Portuguese consumers (65.6%) buy domestic products regularly, while some 48.4% spend up to three quarters of their monthly expenditure on Portuguese food, a study has found.
The study was conducted by ISEG - the Lisbon School of Economics & Management, and surveyed 1,200 consumers, reports Lusa.
This figure represents an increase compared to a study done in 2014, when 62.4% of consumers said that they bought Portuguese products frequently.
The study also reveals that 84.5% of Portuguese consumers pay close attention to the origin of the products they buy.
Food Trends
Consumer preference over origin is highest within oils and wines, with 94.6% of Portuguese shoppers saying that they opt for national products. This is followed by fruits, vegetables, bread, pastry, fish, meat and cheeses.
The study also shows that quality prevails over price as a deciding factor in almost all categories, especially food.
The main reasons that respondents listed for purchasing national products are that they create jobs; help the Portuguese economy; support national companies; and improve the deficit.
