Six Out Of Ten UK Consumers Plan To Spend On Black Friday

A new study has found that more than six out of ten adults in the UK are planning to hunt for deals as Black Friday discounts are launched online and in stores this Friday (27 November).

The report, by independent market researchers Consumer Intelligence, showed that 62 per cent of adults are considering purchasing goods on this day, while nearly half (47 per cent) of shoppers who did not buy on Black Friday last year are planning to take part this time.

Consumer Intelligence's research highlighted that around 31 per cent of adults spent on Black Friday 2014, with people in Scotland (40 per cent) the most enthusiastic, and shoppers in East Anglia (28 per cent) the least so.

Most of the spending was for Christmas shopping, with 59 per cent saying that some of their spending was for others, while 47 per cent said that at least some of their spending was on items for themselves.

Earlier this month, retailer Asda said that it won’t participate in Black Friday this year, and according Consumer Intelligence, there's still a substantial minority who disapprove of Black Friday, with 30 per cent of those surveyed saying that they wished the US tradition had never crossed the Atlantic.

Ian Hughes, chief executive of Consumer Intelligence, said, "Reports of the death of Black Friday are exaggerated, and it appears this year’s will be bigger than ever.

"Nearly half of those who didn’t shop last time are considering it for 27 November, and the majority of sales will be online.

"It certainly makes sense to save money where you can, and it is good news for delivery firms, although they may be struggling to keep up with demand."
