Portuguese retail group Sonae MC plans to launch 40 new Meu Super outlets in 2019 in the districts of Braga, Coimbra, Setúbal, and Faro in Portugal.
In 2018, the retailer opened more than 40 Meu Super stores throughout the country, taking the total store count to 310.
The new stores will add 8,500 square metres of sales area and result in a net sales increase of around €18 million.
Consumption Trends
It will offer products based on consumption trends, and focus on the healthy food segment comprising organic, gluten-free, lactose-free items as well as ready meals, and chilled or frozen food in the convenience category.
The retailer will rely on digital channels to promote a modern image of the brand among younger consumers through partnerships with 'digital influencers' on social media.
Dia, Jerónimo Martins, and Auchan Retail Portugal are also betting on the neighbourhood store format in the country.
Proximity stores have managed to respond to a change in consumption trends, with consumers visiting stores more often and spending less time shopping.
