Sonae Most Popular Portuguese Company For Graduates, Study Finds

Portuguese retail and telecommunications conglomerate Sonae has been named the most attractive Portuguese company for young talents, according to a study.

The ‘Portugal’s Most Attractive Companies’ study, developed by the Spark Agency in collaboration with the University of Minho, surveyed 3,624 students in the fields of Management and Technologies from across 15 Portuguese universities.

The study asked students to rank companies in terms of factors such as offering career-strengthening experiences, an exciting working environment and a good work-life balance.

Industry Leader

Google tops the 2017 rankings as the preferred place to work, with Microsoft coming in second. However, respondents selected Sonae as the third-most desired place to work, making it the highest-ranking homegrown name.

Among retail and commerce companies, Sonae comes out on top for students in both Management and Technologies. 22.5% of Management students and 11.8% Technologies students said they would like to work at Sonae.

While the company rankings are filled with multinational heavyweights such as Bosch (sixth), Nestlé (11th) and Unilever (17th), Portuguese companies dot the upper echelons of the list as well.

In fourth place places Portuguese food company Jerónimo Martins, while the electricity operator Edp ranks fifth, and the national airline TAP Air Portugal comes in at number nine.

Disrupting Innovations

“The result of this study acknowledges the work Sonae has been developing, which, along with its strong international presence, business diversity, investment in innovation and quality and team know-how, provides unique conditions not only to capture and develop talent, but also create leaders that are able to triumph anywhere in the world,” said Maria Antónia Cadilhe, head of talent management & development at Sonae.

Sonae invited national and international startups last month to test retail solutions that it developed as part of its 'Disrupt Retail - Call for Technology.’ The initiative called for improving the retail shopping experience through technology and innovation.

Among the preferred technologies the company was looking for with the initiative were artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, IoT, robotics, virtual and blockchain assistants, or any other areas that may present innovative solutions.
