Spanish Coop Coviran Expands Presence In Portugal

Spanish cooperative Coviran has opened a new supermarket in the Portuguese city of Faro under the banner 'Olga & Luis Barbara'.

The new neighbourhood store, the 51st in the district of Faro, has 100 square metres of retail space and features a complete assortment of self-service delicatessen, fruit and bakery products.

In addition, the supermarket offers a wide range of products and accessories, as well as the best of the Coviran private label brand, consisting of 1,012 references.

The target market is a local population that exceeds 64,000 inhabitants.

In a few years, the Spanish company has managed to become the third largest grocery retailer in Portugal by number of establishments (according to Nielsen), accounting for a 2.13% market share.

In Portugal, Coviran employs 1,660 people, has 327 local partners and works with 262 Portuguese suppliers.

The Coviran model provides local partners with the flexibility to adapt their range and services to local areas, while at the same time offering partners and employees specific training.

Coviran supermarkets are distinguished by their proximity, arriving in parts of the country where other retailers are not present, such as rural areas or those with a lower population density.
