Sales of dried fruit, nuts and snacks have grown in Spain for the seventh consecutive year, showing a slight acceleration in 2016, according to sectoral analysis company, Observatorio Sectorial DBK de Informa.
This was due to favourable economic circumstances and investment in innovation, the company said.
At the close of 2016, provisional sale figures were €2.2 million, 4.3% more than 2015.
The dried fruit and nut segment had the most positive performance, achieving a market value of €860 million in 2016, after increasing 5.5% compared to the previous year.
The snacks market saw growth of 4.3%, reaching €720 million.. The crisps segment in particular saw more moderate growth of 2.5%, or €610 million.
The dried fruit and nut segment has been very dynamic in foreign markets in recent years. In 2015 exports grew 40%, while imports increased by 30%.
The trend of market share growth is expected to continue, with estimated increases of 3 to 4% yearly between 2017 and 2018.
In 2015, there were more than 100 companies with significant production or selling capacity of dried fruits, nuts, and snacks, referring to those with an annual turnover of more than €1 million.
In recent years leading operators have reinforced their position vis-a-vis smaller-sized companies, giving way to more concentration.
In 2015 the first five operators had 46.2% of the total market share, two percentage points more than 2013. The top ten competitors reached a market share of 57.8%.
