Spar Austria is offering free medical-grade FFP2 masks to shoppers as the government has made it mandatory on public transport, shops and businesses, pharmacies, hospitals and medical practices.
The retailer will give one free mask per day to each customer as long as stocks last.
It has arranged for approximately 20 million certified FFP2 masks, a majority of which come from Austria.
The free masks are being distributed at the entrance of Spar, Eurospar, Interspar and Maxim stores, the retailer added.
Along with free masks, Spar also offers FFP2 masks at €0.59 each.
Medical-Grade Masks
REWE Group's Austrian brands Billa, Merkur and Penny are offering free FFP2 masks to customers from 25 to 27 January.
The retailers will distribute around 20 million masks in this period to ensure a safe shopping experience for customers.
Management board member at REWE International AG, Marcel Haraszti, commented, “The demand for FFP2 masks has been very high in the last few days. We have noticed that a great deal of uncertainty is also spreading about the availability of FFP2 masks.
“We have therefore decided to counteract this and to take some of the pressure off by offering our customers the first FFP2 masks free of charge.”
