SPAR Austria has announced that it is testing filling stations for unpackaged and loose organic food items in its INTERSPAR hypermarket at the Europark shopping centre in Salzburg.
The product assortment includes, among others, cereals, nuts, and pulses, pasta, rice, and dried fruit.
The range includes a large selection of products from SPAR Natur*pur as well as goods sourced from local suppliers.
Customers have the option to use free-of-cost paper bags offered in the store or bring or buy containers for their purchases.
Innovative Filling Station
The retailer teamed up with its supplier HL Display to design the innovative filling station, which uses a ‘first in- first out’ system.
The bins are filled from the top and emptied from the bottom, unlike traditional filling stations, ensuring optimal shelf life of food products.
'Unnecessary Plastic Packaging'
Managing director of INTERSPAR Austria, Markus Kaser, said, “For the sake of the climate and the environment, INTERSPAR is constantly tackling unnecessary plastic packaging.
“I am pleased that we are the first large food retailer in Austria to be able to offer a filling station for unpacked organic food, in addition to the test operation of the filling stations for certified organic laundry and dishwashing detergents.”
In January of this year, the retailer introduced filling stations offering bio-certified laundry and dishwashing detergents in selected INTERSPAR Hypermarkets in Salzburg and Vienna as part of a trial project.
