Spar has opened its first premium store in China, with a focus on green, environmentally friendly and health conscious produce.
Spar Fuxiang launched the new store in the central business district of Zhangjiakou, in the northern Chinese province of Hebei.
The city of 4.3 million people boasts convenient transportation routes and will host the 2020 Winter Olympics.
The new store offers over 6,000 SKUs in a selling area of 2,400 square metres. It features a food-to-go section, an in-store bakery, and seafood and butchery sections.
"The store has become a very popular shopping destination thanks to its quality service and products,” Spar said in a statement.
It will focus on meeting the needs of both top-end customers and the general public, as well as convenience shopping for local residents.
Continued Expansion
“With the strong support of the Spar China team, Spar Fuxiang will continue to invest in store expansion and look at new market opportunities in the coming years,” the retailer said.
In 2016, Spar China saw a 6.7% growth in sales, while store numbers increased by 14%.
Spar Fuxiang plans to open 12 new stores in the near future. The retailer has been present in China since the launch of its first supermarket in November 2004.
In September, Spar International appointed Jerome Chevrier as the new managing director for its China operations. Chevrier had previously held several senior roles in the Chinese retail sector, having lived and worked there for over 20 years.
