Spar has won the NACS Insight 2017 International Convenience Retailer of the Year Award for its Spar Natural convenience store in Gran Canaria, Spain.
The award was presented at this year's International Convenience Retailer Awards in London on 14 June.
Spar Natural
The Spar Natural store, which was launched in Gran Canaria in January 2017, recognises that 'trends in health and wellness are driving growth within the retail food industry' and that this is an area which is set to 'grow significantly' within the next five years.
Spar developed the concept in response to the growing demand for health and wellness products, and the store features a range of over 4,000 of these items, which are sourced both internationally and locally.
Breaking New Ground
Tobias Wasmuht, managing director of Spar International, said that this award illustrates the "pioneering retail experiences" that the company delivers.
"In all 44 countries we operate in, SPAR works with our partners to tailor our offering to the needs of the local market, while at the same time sharing SPAR’s expertise and international best practice," he said.
The judges said that the Spar Natural store had 'broken new ground' in health and wellness, by providing customers with greater access to natural products and a wide range of alternatives for those with food intolerances.
The winner was selected by a jury of experts from the areas of business, retail and design. Two of the ten finalists for the award were Spar stores - Spar Natural in Gran Canaria, and Spar Ratchapruek in Thailand.
