Spar Austria To Remain In Hungary - Gerhard Drexel

Spar Austria has no plans to cease its retail operations in Hungary, according to comments by its head Gerhard Drexel in a report in Austrian newspaper Die Presse.

However, he said that the supermarket group does object to certain regulations in Hungary.

Drexel told Die Presse that  "business is booming for the company in Hungary, which is why it will not withdraw from the country simply because of laws that are incomprehensible and violate European Union rules."

He complained that new rules requiring foreign-owned businesses to pay an oversight fee up to 6 per cent although Hungarian firms pay only. 0.1 per cent.

Drexel also hit out at the European Commission for failing to take action.
