Supermarket Ready Meals Contain Double The Sugar Of Chocolate

Some supermarket ready meals contain more sugar than an adult’s daily recommended limit of 50g, a consumer group in Britain has revealed.

Consumer research group Which? studied 17 ready meals from Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose and found the highest sugar levels to be in the sweet and sour dishes.

Sainsbury’s Sweet and Sour Chicken and Rice was found to contain 50.7g — the equivalent of 10 teaspoons per pack and almost double that of a standard size Dairy Milk chocolate bar, which contains 25.5g of sugar.

Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “With rising obesity rates, it is shocking to find that ready meals contain more sugar than a chocolate bar.

"This goes against the ethos of the Government’s responsibility deal with food businesses, part of which asked manufacturers to cut calories.

“We want the Government to set clear targets for calorie reductions as a priority as part of the responsibility deal.”

Health experts warn that high levels of sugar in everyday foods are contributing to health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.

Earlier this year the World Health Organisation proposed the recommended daily sugar allowance should be halved to around five heaped teaspoons to help ease the obesity crisis.

Supermarkets insist they are working hard to reduce sugar levels in all their ranges and are making sure nutritional content is clearly labelled on packaging so customers can make "informed decisions".
