Citing customer requests, Tesco Hungary decided to open 33 of its supermarkets as early as 5am, the British retailer told Hungarian news portal origo.hu.
Following legislation that left Hungarian supermarkets closed on Sundays, retailers are trying to find loopholes in the law on the Sunday shopping ban.
The press department of UK’s largest grocer did not cite the divisive Hungarian legislation, rather they said that the early shopping was introduced to meet customer needs.
After the Sunday shopping ban was adopted, Tesco closed 13 of its 222 stores in Hungary.
Auchan, one of the major competitors of Tesco in Hungary, said that they are also considering amending business hours. According to origo.hu, most of the outlets of the French retailer now usually open at 6am.
