Tesco Managers Asked To Be Nicer To Staff

Tesco has asked its store managers to be more polite and encouraging in their interactions with the staff they supervise.

Matt Davies, chief executive of Tesco’s UK and Irish business explained that the the objective is to boost company morale. He did not outline strict guidelines for the plan, but rather framed it as more of a general change of approach.

Davies was quoted by TheGuardian.com as saying, "It is about celebrating success and the power of appreciation. There is power in saying thank you and of spotting somebody doing a job well and appreciating that.

"This is not about a training programme but developing a culture of appreciating one another."

Speaking of the broader issue of regenerating the business at the Retail Week Live conference, Davies said "Rebuilding trust is a core part of what we need to do – rebuilding trust with colleagues, customers and the nation at large – and that will take a period of time and will follow from running our business the right way."
