Retailer Tesco has announced operational changes in its Express convenience format in the UK, meant to optimise shopper experience and simplify operations.
These changes follow a successful trial in multiple stores, and will mean the creation of 3,300 'shift leader' roles, while eliminating deputy manager positions.
During this week, roughly 1,700 deputy managers will begin consultations with Tesco, and will then be given the opportunity to become shift leaders or assume other positions within the chain.
Tracey Clements, the managing director of convenience at Tesco, commented, "To help improve our service to customers in our Express stores we are aiming to have more of our colleagues on the shop floor, more often".
"We appreciate that these changes will impact our deputy manager colleagues, and will do everything we can to support them throughout this period.”
The proposed changes will result in a net increase of approximately 1,500 positions, the company said.
Tesco operates more than 1,800 Express stores throughout the UK.
