Italy's U2 Supermercato has won an award at the Milan Expo 2015, honoured as an 'Essential Supermarket' for providing a simple and low-cost offer, without compromising on quality.
The supermarket chain received the recognition at the Expo, from Alimentiamo and Deloitte, as a recognition for "paving the way for a new food retail model".
U2 Supermercato uses a EDLP business model, and has been recognised as the cheapest in Italy for four years running (2011-2014), both for private label and branded products, in a survey conducted by a consumers association among 909 hypermarkets, supermarkets and discount stores.
U2 Supermercato is owned by Italian retail group Unes, which also operates the U! Unes Supermercati insignia.
