Food businesses in the UK have reported a 17% year-on-year reduction in food waste, valued at £300 million, according to IGD’s latest Social Impact Report.
The finding includes businesses that publicly report data through the food waste reduction roadmap, launched in 2018 by IGD and WRAP.
The report also noted that charities and food banks secured more than 22,000 pallets of donations from food and consumer goods companies during the pandemic.
'A Fantastic Job'
CEO of IGD, Susan Barratt, commented, “In a year of unprecedented disruption, the food and consumer goods industry has done a fantastic job to keep food on the shelves and protect the most vulnerable in our society; we owe a debt of gratitude to all the food heroes working across our industry.”
The Social Impact Report also highlighted that the IGD facilitated training in valuable employability and life skills for around 6,000 young people at a time of rising unemployment.
IGD also delivered 11,000 free learning hours to industry professionals in 2020 to build their knowledge and skills and foster an inclusive and productive workforce.
Barratt added, “At IGD, our purpose is to drive change and make a tangible difference to society by uniting and inspiring our industry. We do this through sharing knowledge, through collaboration and by delivering great programmes on specific challenges.”
