A delay in the developing of a site for a new Morrisons superstore in Bishopbriggs in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, has been described as frustrating by local MP Jo Swinson, who welcomes the news that the site is to be cleaned up.
The East Dunbartonshire MP recently met with senior figures at the supermarket chain to discuss its plans to build the new store and petrol station on the former Bishopbriggs High School site.
Morrisons told the MP that the development is still under review with no decision imminent.
Residents had already written to the MP expressing their concerns about the state of the development site.
Swinson raised their issues at the meeting with the grocery retailer.
The supermarket has now confirmed that contractors will begin work on clearing up the site in January.
MP Jo Swinson said: "It’s very frustrating that in the last year there has been no progress on the plans for Bishopbriggs town centre, when such a prime site is lying empty and unkempt."
She continued: "I know local people and business owners want to know what will happen, which is why I pushed Morrisons for more detail on their intentions. However, I do welcome the fact that there will be some much needed action to tidy up the messy site, and I am pleased that Morrisons will be paying close attention to the state of the site in future to pre-empt any future complaints."
At the moment plans seem to be "firmly stalled", she said, adding that she will continue to keep people updated on any future developments.
Speaking on the issue, a Morrisons spokesperson that the retailer does not yet have a firm timetable for the new store development.
"We understand this might be disappointing news, but want to reassure the community that Morrisons is committed to the future of the Bishopbriggs store."
