UK supermarket chain Waitrose has announced that it won the Europe-wide Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) 'Best Retailer Award' for the second time this year.
Waitrose also won the inaugural 'Cage-Free Award' for its commitment to eliminating all cages from its business.
The CIWF awards recognise and reward producers, manufacturers, food service companies, retailers and public bodies across the world for working in a sustainable and responsible way.
Collaborative Working
Waitrose agriculture director Heather Jenkins said, "This award is an extraordinary and powerful testament to the commitment of many colleagues, our farmers and our supply chain partners."
“It demonstrates the strength of collaborative working to ensure our high standards of animal welfare are maintained. We are absolutely delighted that these efforts have been recognised and proud to be able to share some beautiful photographs of those at the heart of this win - our animals and our farmers."
Dr Tracey Jones, director of food business for CIWF, added, “Waitrose has been a leader in the field of farm animal welfare for a number of years and their commitment is evident in the awards they have received this year."
“They set an excellent example to other food businesses and we look forward to seeing how their successful advertising campaign will be rolled out across other species in the autumn, to help drive awareness of higher welfare products available on Waitrose’s shelves and influence the nation’s buying habits.”
