Waitrose buyers are the first of a UK supermarket chain to purchase emu eggs, which will retail in supermarkets at £23.99, DailyMail.co.uk reports.
The product takes between an hour and 90 minutes to cook, and contains the volume of 12 hen-laid eggs. Factored into their price is the fact that they are only available during the winter months, and that each emu only produces a single egg every three days.
Waitrose’s supplier is Clarence Court, whose brand ambassadors include TV chefs Rick Stein and Jamie Oliver.
On its website, the company says the emu eggs are “a touch milder in taste compared to a hen egg and possess a fluffier texture. They also boast a high ratio or yolk to white, nearly half white/half yolk, allowing extraordinary results when used for baking cakes.”
It also notes that they are "in season late November to early May," and "only available in selected Waitrose and Wholefood Stores."
