Wal-Mart Stores is planning to introduce a subscription-based shipping service that would rival Amazon Prime, according to a report in technology news website the Information.
Wal-Mart’s service -- codenamed “Tahoe”-- will be available in the next few weeks or early summer, the Information reported, citing people familiar with the plan. It was originally supposed to start last year before the holidays, the Information said, but was delayed by the retailer because of technical challenges.
With Amazon’s Prime service, customers pay $99 a year for fast delivery as well as discounts on an array of products. Shoppers also get access to online streaming of music, movies and TV shows.
A representative for Wal-Mart didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
