German retail group Rewe is ‘making good progress’ in its endeavour to develop a future-proof supermarket concept, according to Lebensmittel Zeitung.
The trade magazine reports that seven pilots have opened under the ‘Rewe 2020’ concept and the company is now fine tuning the various features and elements.
Tailored Stores
Lebensmittel Zeitung reports that Rewe will tailor its new stores to better fit their catchment areas.
It says that, depending on location, they may contain sushi bars, coffee bars, tobacco humidors and Deli am Markt bistro areas, in addition to the standard salad and deli bars, and meat, charcuterie, cheese and fish counters.
The final concept is not expected before 2018.
Group Progress
Rewe Group posted a revenue increase of 5% last year to €54 billion. The company noted that this was driven by Rewe supermarkets in Germany, which experienced an increase in sales of 3.9% in 2016, growing to €18.4 billion.
