Portuguese retailer Continente has launched a new app that allows users to complete online grocery orders using their voice.
The new app, called Smart Continente, lets shoppers create grocery lists, set preferences and receive personalised recommendations for products, thanks to an artificial intelligence system that aims to speed up the shopping process and offer a unique experience for each user.
The app uses speech recognition in Portuguese, with an automatic learning function.
Users can check prices and promotions, and quickly add multiple products at a time. They can then request delivery or make a payment, completing the purchase on Continente’s website or on the Continente app.

Thanks to the new app, customers no longer have to be in front of the screen to do their online shopping. No matter where they are, they can simply dictate the products they want, quickly and conveniently.
Smart Continente has been developed in partnership with startup Shelf.ai, and is now available for Android and iOS devices.
In its 2017 results, Continente-owner Sonae MC reported that online retail sales surpassed €100 million for the first time ever.
Overall, the Portuguese retail group saw sales increase by 5.4% to €3.8 billion, boosted by the continued expansion of its Continente Bom Dia proximity store concept, having opened 19 new outlets last year.
