Spar Austria has announced that it will be reducing the amount of sugar in its own-brand products, to meet consumers' demand for less sugary foods.
Products such as its organic yoghurt line and Vital Corn Flakes will have reduced or zero added sugar.
Spar Austria said that the daily sugar intake of Austrians is four times the amount recommended by the World Health Organisation (25 grams).
The retailer hopes that 'by offering healthier food options, it can contribute to helping customers lead a healthier life.'
While promoting a sugar-free or reduced sugar diet is one of the company's initiatives, Spar Austria is also contributing to child health by promoting more nutritious lunches, providing healthy recipes, and working with groups such as SIPCAN, the Institute for Preventive Cardiology and Nutrition.
The company said it collaborates with a scientific advisory board, composed of doctors, dieticians and nutritionists, who offer advice on the latest health and wellness trends.
