All 790 supermarkets trading under Ahold USA’s banners will only sell sustainably caught fish and fish products in both its branded and private label categories.
The supply chain resolution is in accordance with industry codes of good practice, and applies to the chains Giant-Carlisle, Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover and Ahold’s US e-commerce banner Peapod.
The commitment will also affect Ahold US’s private label lines Giant, Nature's Promise, Simply Enjoy, CareOne, and Guaranteed Value.
Senior vice president for responsible retailing and healthy living for Giant-Carlisle, Marissa Nelson, was quoted by ProgressiveGrocer.com as saying, "Sustainable seafood is the right consumer choice and is also better for the health of the aquatic ecosystems that produce it.
"We work with seafood suppliers who share our same values of respect for the environment and responsible product sourcing. By supporting these environmentally responsible fisheries and fish farms, our division stores provide high-quality seafood that is not only good for our customers, but ensure the same quality seafood will be available for years to come."
