Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn has renovated and expanded one of its main distribution facilities for online orders, the Home Shop Center (HSC) in De Meern, near Utrecht in the Netherlands. The new facilities were opened on 4 September.
To double the centre's processing capacity, its floor area has been extended to around 10,800 square meters. A new production hall has been constructed within the property, which now includes the adjacent building.
In addition, a new 3,000 square meter cold-storage area will enable the company to include fresh produce in its home-delivery service.
Patrick Daniels, Senior Director of Operations for AH Online, commented: "The number of customers shopping for groceries online with ah.nl continues to grow. The expansion of the Home Shop Center in De Meern means we will be able to deliver orders to around 25,000 customers per week."
HSC De Meern currently employs over 500 people. The expansion will create an additional 200 jobs.
