Aldi Australia has said it will no longer sell battery eggs by the year 2025, as the retailer came to an agreement with its suppliers to reduce the amount between now and then.
The HeraldSun.com.au reports the decision is a reaction to significant public pressure, as Aldi has been at the centre of a social media storm calling for an end the controversial method of farming eggs.
Rival Woolworths has already made the commitment to end the retailing of caged-hen eggs, while Coles has already removed all such eggs from its private label lines.
Animal rights group Animals Australia welcomed the move, saying, “This is a win for the 100,000 people who supported Animals Australia’s campaign, it’s a win for Aldi’s customers who’ve been heard, it’s a win for everyone who cares about animals, but ultimately, Aldi’s decision is a win for hens.
“Caging hens for their entire lives for the sake of cheap eggs is cruel and immoral and that’s why we’re seeing more and more corporations the world over refusing to financially support the cage egg industry.”
