Discounter Aldi has announced that it has introduced the 'Grüner Knopf' (Green Button) seal to label sustainable textiles.
Presently, the retailer is offering baby tights and baby socks made of fabric that has acquired the Grüner Knopf certification.
Managing director corporate responsibility and quality assurance at Aldi Nord, Rayk Mende, said, "We have been committed for many years to improving the social, economic and environmental conditions in the textile supply chain. With the Grüner Knopf, we give our customers an additional orientation when shopping."
Rigorous Review
Director of corporate responsibility at Aldi Süd, Dr Julia Adou, added, "For the Grüner Knopf, both Aldi as a company and our products have been rigorously reviewed. We are therefore pleased to support this ambitious initiative."
The seal will be gradually added to other products as they meet all the 26 social and ecological standards outlined by an independent advisory board.
To acquire the seal, participating companies are required to demonstrate compliance based on these standards, which are constantly being developed, the retailer said.
