Auchan Hungary Sells Eggs in Bulk

Customers are encouraged to pick their own eggs in one of the Hungarian supermarkets of French grocery retailer Auchan.

The retailer´s objective was to create a market-like atmosphere within their supermarket aisles, where customers can spend some time picking the eggs their like the most. Auchan Hungary said that most shoppers habitually open egg boxes to check for quality and possible damages.

Customers do not have to buy 6 or 10 eggs at once – eggs are usually packed in these quantities in Hungary. Rather, they can opt for as many as they want. Shoppers are also provided gloves and empty egg boxes for the process.

According to agrarszektor.hu, several large supermarket chains are considering to introduce bulk egg sales in Hungary. However, the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) said that there is no legislation prohibiting such sales method, but it does raise a number of food safety and traceability issues.

Following the test sales, Auchan plans to introduce unpackaged eggs in its other outlets as well.
