French agrifood giant Groupe Avril has signed the ‘Filière Qualité Carrefour’ charter, which will see the company grow GMO-free soya beans across 8,000 hectares of land which will in turn be used as pork feed, adhering to the supermarket chain’s supply chain criteria.
The sustainably-grown soya beans are part of Carrefour’s 'Origine France' food chain classification. They will be grown by the cooperative Euralis, and prepared by Sojalim (a joint venture between the Avril group and Euralis).
The soya beans will be used as feed for pigs farmed by companies that have a relationship with the supply chain agreement Filière Qualité Carrefour.
In a joint statement, the Avril group and Carrefour vowed to “implement an ambitious agro-ecological plan that combines environmental, social and economic facets, which together will benefit French agrifood supply chains.”
