Sales of industrial bakery and pastry products in Portugal increased by 2.4% in 2016 compared to the previous year, totalling €645 million.
According to a market study carried out by Informa D&B and reported by Lusa, this performance was boosted by the frozen segment, which has registered an above market average growth in recent years due to increased consumption in the hospitality sector.
Exports reached €205 million in 2016, 9% more than in the previous year, with Spain being the main destination for sales abroad. The value of imports stood at €318 million, 7.4% more than in 2015.
The bakery and pastry industry in Portugal consists of around 6,300 companies. Small companies dominate the sector, with about 85% of them having a staff of less than ten employees.
