Fairtrade Italia has reported a 10 per cent growth in sales of Fairtrade-certified products in Italy last year, reaching €99 million.
The lion's share of sales was on bananas, which alone account for more than 50 per cent of the overall volume of products, exceeding 10,000 tons. Sugar is second (+30% compared to 2014), followed by coffee (+10%) and cocoa (+7%).
About 57% of the value (45% by volume) of Fairtrade products sold in Italy last year was also certified organic, confirming a consolidated interest of Italian consumers for sustainable and ethical purchases.
Significantly, exports by Italian companies grew, witnessing growing sales to foreign markets thanks to the Fairtrade system.
In Italy, 145 companies are Fairtrade partners and with 700 items of different products are present in more than 5,000 retail outlets.
