French retail group Carrefour has entered into an agreement with the Nouvelle Aquitaine Regional Chamber of Agriculture to develop organically-grown produce in the area.
The company has said that the aim of the agreement is to ‘encourage exchanges and collaboration between the region’s farmers and the banner to meet an increasing demand by consumers for organically farmed products’.
In signing the agreement, Carrefour has committed to:
- make its requirements known in respect of organic raw materials
- draw up multi-year agreements with producers relating to new regional and national supply lines for organic products
- promote the region’s organic products
Corporate Responsibility
This agreement is in line with Carrefour’s policy of sustainable and responsible growth across all its European chains.
Recently, Carrefour Italia unveiled a new line of salami produced by Filiera Benessere Animale, which works with livestock farming that protects animal welfare.
It also unveiled a new ‘urban agriculture’ initiative by creating a vegetable garden on the roof of one of its stores in France.
