Carrefour has undertaken a supply chain initiative to contribute to a reduction in deforestation, which will see the retailer ensure its barbecue charcoal products and outdoor garden furniture are made from wood that has been responsibly sourced.
The supermarket chain is operating within the guidelines set out by the internationally-recognised Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which examines each phase within supply chains, 'from forest to the finished product'.
To coincide with European Sustainable Development Week (30 May to 5 June), Carrefour 'is sharing its initiatives on a daily basis, its specific actions in France and the countries in which it operates to limit the depletion of natural resources, guarantee long term offerings and fulfil customers’ expectations increasingly well', it said in a press release.
The French grocer is a formal supporter of the Consumer Goods Forum’s mission to end deforestation by 2020, and currently retails more than 60 FSC-certified SKUs.
