Carrefour is working with Big Data firm Agrotools to ensure that its Brazilian supply chains are as ecologically sound as possible.
The French supermarket giant is attempting to stop meat production in areas that are deforested, under an environmental embargo, in protected areas, in indigenous territories, or in areas where illegal labour is known to take place.
'Cattle farming is one of Brazil's main economic activities,' a recent Carrefour press release notes, 'and there is enormous export potential. One of the sector's main challenges is to improve meat quality while reconciling production with protecting biodiversity.'
Crunching Big Data, Carrefour 'will monitor all purchases of fresh beef destined for national consumption. It will limit the social and environmental risks in the supply chain.'
The initiative is a joint project between Carrefour and Brazil’s Mato Grosso state, where meat farming is an important and prominent industry.
