The region of Tuscany is reportedly facing a drop in honey production, as a result of poor weather conditions, according to Italian news agency ANSA.
Due to a combination of unseasonable frosts in spring and a recent drought, honey production in the region is expected to decrease by 30% compared to the national average. In particular, the harvest in the Montalcino region, which normally represents 10% of national production, is anticipated to be well down on previous years.
Worries
Commenting, Michele Valleri, from Osservatorio Nazionale del Miele, a body that regulates honey production, said that the most recent data for the sector was available for July, "but nothing has been added after that. April's frosts ruined the acacia flowering process."
In Tuscany, a total of 4,657 beekeepers operate more than 98,000 hives.
