UK retailer The Co-operative has announced the creation of the Scottish Salmon Farming Group as part of its commitment to sell responsibly-sourced fresh fish.
This operation follows the retailer's recent pledge to source only 100% fresh British meat for its own brand products.
The new group, which includes stakeholders across the supply chain, such as Farne Salmon and Trout Ltd, will help to build long-term relationships with suppliers and farmers across Scotland.
The company has been member of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition since 2011, working with suppliers and focusing on fish welfare and environmental impact.
Growing Demand
“At a time when consumer demand is rising, now is the perfect time to launch this new Scottish Salmon Farming Group,” said the Co-op’s fish sustainability manager Aisla Jones, underlining that the operation will strengthen their existing supplier relationships.
Elsewhere, Dale Hill, Farne Salmon’s head of aquaculture and quality, added that his company is "delighted" that the Co-op is investing in this sector.
