Portuguese banner Continente has launched a new initiative aimed at informing customers about emerging food trends.
The Continente Food Lab will see dedicated displays rolled out to selected hypermarkets, the creation of a dedicated website, and a series of product activations.
New product launches will be identified with the Continente Food Lab seal, and shoppers will be called upon to determine whether these will be added to the retailer's permanent selection.
Continente Food Lab is aiming to respond to the main emerging trends in food by introducing a new co-creation concept alongside Portuguese producers.
New Products
The first products launched, which are already available in the retailer's Colombo and Matosinhos outlets, are Beyond Burger, Salsichas de Ovo, Lemon'Mate, Dom Rosato Free and Bread Beer.
Continente is the first hypermarket and supermarket banner in Portugal to introduce Beyond Burger, a pioneering hamburger produced with ingredients of plant origin and with an appearance and experience of cooking and tasting equivalent to that of beef.
Salsichas de Ovo is a vegetarian product made from egg white protein combined with vegetables and spices, which has a similar appearance and taste to a conventional sausage.
Lemon'Mate is a biological soft drink, made from concentrated lemon juice, extract of mate tea leaves and caffeine, entirely produced in Portugal, while Dom Rosato Free is an alcohol-free rosé wine, produced in Portugal by José Maria da Fonseca cellars.
Finally, Bread Beer is a beer produced from surplus bread collected from Continente stores. In addition to combating food waste, it is also positioned as an artisan beer, and is produced by Vadia.
