Coop Italia has won the Logistics of the Year 2017 Award for its innovative and sustainable freight transport system.
The award is presented by Italian logistics trade associations Assologistica and Euromerci, and assigned to projects carried out in various fields of the logistics chain. In the case of Coop Italia, the award was assigned in the context of eco-sustainability.
The Italian cooperative and retailer developed an innovative and sustainable way of transporting goods in collaboration with Chep Italia, a leader in pallet pooling services, and with two of its private label suppliers - Sorgenti Emiliane Modena, one of the main Italian companies active in bottling, production and distribution of mineral waters; and detergent producer Deco Industrie.
Waste Reduction
The 'Multiplayer Collaborative Transport' project ensured a significant reduction in trips of empty trucks, thus reducing CO2 emissions and reduced costs for all actors involved.
The total savings allow a reduction in CO2 emissions of 20 tons on an annual basis of about 19,000 km of routes.
According to Giuseppe Bertini, Director Logistics and Supply Chain Coop Italia, the intention is to extend the system to all Coop Italia private label producers in time.
