Coop Netherlands has announced that it is trialling a new 100% electric truck, which will be used to supply its Coop Vandaag stores in Rotterdam.
The retailer says that it has set a goal to create zero emissions from transport and logistics in the city centre of Rotterdam by 2020.
Coop adds that this pilot scheme will allow the company to explore new possibilities for electric supply solutions in inner city areas.
Together with this trial, the company is also looking to reduce emissions in its store network, with the aim of reaching zero emissions by 2025.
Sustainable Solutions
Coen Worst, transport manager at Coop Netherlands, says that this introduction will allow the supermarket group to supply its stores in a sustainable manner, reducing both air pollution and noise pollution in densely populated areas.
Coop is not the first supermarket chain to introduce electric vehicles in the Netherlands.
In May, Albert Heijn commissioned its first two fully-electric trucks to supply its supermarkets in Amsterdam, while the following month, Jumbo introduced electric vehicles for its online delivery service Groningen and Utrecht.
